SP07 PSYCHIC ILLS – Astral Occurrence OUT OF PRINT

Pressed in an edition of 250 copies on 200 gram white vinyl

We’re pleased to announce Astral Occurence, the very long awaited realization of a collaboration between New York’s PSYCHIC ILLS and The Spring Press. Recorded onto an old 4-track cassette recorder in a humid basement in the East Village across from the Hells Angels headquarters, Astral Occurrence plays like an urban cosmic journey of uninterrupted jamming; at times rhythmic and repetitious, at others sparse and droning.

“Faced with a deluge of groove based psych, many listeners failed to notice Psychic Ills peculiar idiosyncracy, and they got subsumed. Now that all is quiet, or quieter, on the kaleidoscpoic rock front, it’s easier to hear the radical economy that sets them apart. While most freaked-out churners give in to the temptation to throw everything into the cauldron and boil, Psychic Ills cherrypick their ingredients and slow roast till golden… a mirror in a desert gently turning in the breeze.” – The Wire

“Extended to unreasonable lengths, the rhythms and tones on Astral Occurrence create music without an arch and a sound that traces no shape: recordings that resist culminating in a climax in favor of amassing, and holding. This record is a huge wave that never breaks. It carries a sound that leads back through the ‘60s to a time before psychedelic music became self aware, developed a distinct language and eventually withered. Psych is rarely so simple and heady as on Astral Occurrence. If there is a musical path leading back to an earlier consciousness, this is a record which should be able to locate it.” – Cameron McKean.
